A Very BAAAD Store for Me!

I Love Lakeshore Learning Store!

It's a very bad, bad store for me. I even told the sales clerk today that this was a very bad, bad store for me. I could easily spend my life savings at this store. EASILY!!

Lakeshore is a store that sells educational materials and toys for children. Everything is like a fun game and yet it is so educational at the same time. LOVE IT!!

As I have been working with Shaeler on her homework and listening to Brian talk about some of his weaknesses he had as a child, it became very clear that Shaeler learns things like Brian. Which means that I need to be able to creatively work with her to get past those weaknesses. Hence why I forced myself to the bad store, I needed fun creative ideas and this is the perfect place to go.

One thing that I see in a lot of children and youth today is that the imagination is completely gone. There is very little playing and making things up because the television and video games do all the work now. So, I wanted to do a win/win combo in helping Shae. Creatively write stories while she would be applying her writing, reading, art and spelling.
In the beginning stages, I am just going to let her go free with whatever she wants to write about and how she writes it. She is LOVING this! I tell her to pick a letter for the day. Then we think of an object that starts with that letter and she draws a picture of it. Then I tell her to write a story about this picture in this writing journal I purchased at Lakeshore.

Today's letter she chose was the letter M and C. So she drew a mouse and cat.

Then I had her write a story about the cat and the mouse. I told her the story could be whatever she wanted it to be. This is what she wrote:

I know that it is not correct spelling, but I can read it because I understand that she is writing phonetically. So I will translate for you:
The cat tried to get
the mouse so the cat could have it.
cat have dinner
Oh, I love the story because she wrote it, she drew it and she sounded it out on her own.
And she looks forward to the next day so she can do another story again!

Nothing is more important to me than to keep learning fun and to teach her a love of reading, writing and drawing. Hopefully this will help her and teach her that learning is something to look forward to since she has another 14 years ahead of her.

i love it! bayli is so into writing and crafting her stories/jokes. she especially is loving to write "jed is a girl," or "dad is a girl." i love these girls! even though my table and counter are strewn with her artwork, papers, pencils, tape, crayons, markers, and scissors i am loving that she loves to draw and write. it amazes me how fast they learn.
i best stay away from this fun store:)

I hear you with that store! I use to work at Utah Idaho supply years ago before I was married and had kids. It's the same type of store for educational things and it was always so hard to not come home everyday with my paycheck spend on things for my nieces and nephews!

That is great that Shae is learning new things!

Elie is so into drawing and painting right now, and I love it! I just wish she would do it without the Sharpies, but that is her colorer of choice. I've started to get their catalogs, but I didn't really have any idea who/what they were-so thanks for shedding some light on that subject.

P.S. One of my favorite school projects I ever did was in 5th grade. On Monday we would get a paper with some 'mark' (shape, swiggle line, etc) and we would have to come up with a picture. Then on Thursdays (our computer lab day), we had to make a story to go with our picture. Then we put all our artwork and stories in a booklet at the end of the year. I still have mine too. I loved it!

Starting the journal writing early is a great idea and it will help a lot in her future. I loved the story she about the cat and the mouse. It shows how creative and amazing she really is.
