Finding Joy in the Journey: The Suit

Our dear prophet has challenged us to find joy in our journies, which I have found quite entertaining. There have been a few moments in my life this week, where I look back and have found joy in what some would consider pretty low times. I have thought about this for some time whether I was going to post these kind of details in my life, but after much thought, I feel that for my documentation purposes and to show that I am a very real person that deals with life circumstances, that I can find joy in Anything. So every once in a while, you will find me posting an ongoing series of posts titled: Finding Joy in the Journey!

So here we go:

The Suit

Brian feels that he needs to start wearing his suit more often for church. He puts on his $400 suit I bought for him 5 years ago and he looks like a little kid wearing his dads church coat. The thing is GINORMOUS on him.

Me: You can't wear that. You look like a little kid.

Brian: I know, but I am the only guy in there that is not wearing a suit coat.

Me: You look ridiculous!

Brian: What am I going to do?

Me: Well, I remember Fred (name changed) got a really nice suite at the DI for like $40. We should do that. We cannot afford to buy you a new suit right now. So either you go looking like a kid in his dad's jacket or go with just your white shirt or we can get you a suit at the DI.

Brian: This does not comfort me.

Suzanne: Do not worry, we can go to the Murray one, there is bound to be really nice suits there.

Brian: Yes, I am sure the Murray DI has much better suits. (Turns around and leaves the room disheartened).

Suzanne: (Me replying to him as he leaves) Well at least Frank looked really nice in his DI suit.

In the end, it really doesn't matter what Brian wears to church. It is the Man inside the white shirt or suit that really matters. Joy is not found in the clothing he wears. It is the person inside that matters. Brian brings joy into our home because of the man he is everyday. He is a wonderful husband, father, friend and leader. It doesn't matter what he looks like, what matters is who he is and what he does. And for me, it brings me great joy!

Matthew 6:19-21

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Just remind him that just because you have a suit on does not make the priesthood stronger in your lives - he is the only one who can control that.

You could always have RaNae alter it! I remember the year you bought that for him, thats funny that its too big now. I'll keep me open for a good suit, but you are right. It's not the suit on the man, its the man in the suit that counts the most.

Just find blessings that you have a priesthood holder who is willing to accompany you and Shae to church and uphold his callings. Many women aren't as fortunate in that area as you, plus he looks great in just about anything.

Good thought! It's always nice to find Joy in any situation.. I have had to do that alot with Parenting lately..
This post brings me comfort. I wish I had a couple hundred to get some new clothes for me. I wear the same 2 skirts to church every other week, and being in the RS pres, I always worry what people think.. Maybe they'll think Why doesn't she save her money she spends on furniture and buy herself some new clothes?? Oh-- wait.. That's what I think.. :)

Ok, so my question is why is the suit so big? I don't remember your husband being particulary large. :)

Due to medical conditions, Brian had to take prednizone for a period of time. It is a steroid that made him gain a lot of weight. We bought the suit back then, because his old mission suits did not even fit. Mission suits have worn out and now he just has the big suit! -Suzanne

I am with Katie. Alter the old suit to fit. You can use either RaNea or Chong Cleaners is around the corner from you. She altered many items for me.

The suit doesn't make the man, but if he feels good in it, his inner self will shine. You know how you feel when you get complements in a particular dress. Do you want some Christmas money early?

OH mom! I love you! Hold on to your Christmas money! -Suzanne

I sent a comment earlier, but I'm afraid that it didn't make it through. Just wanted you to know that I am reading your blog--just haven't commented before.

I, too, believe in "Joy in the Journey" despite where it may take us. We do our best (which changes due to circumstances) and then trust that what comes next is the opportunity to learn and grow and realize that we are important enough to be blessed, chastened, polished, loved, remembered. "Joy in the journey" can be just knowing we are not alone. I love that we first see what's on the outside and progress to recognizing what's on the inside, as you did with "The Suit." That recognition includes acknowledging what's on the "inside" of our own hearts and feeling the joy in loving whatever is. Too complex? Hope not. Looking forward to seeing you in Vegas later this month.

I am glad that he is doing better that the suit is too big. That in initself is a blessing.

I lauged at your mom's comment because it brought back memories of us growing up. I don't know why I remember chong cleaners.

The suit doesn't matter, but having it tailored is a great idea. You are blessed to have a worthy priesthood member in your home. :)
