The Screwtape Letters

I am not sure if it is all the Period movies that I am watching lately, or that inner voice that has been talking to me for a while and likes to echo in my ears "Refinement" all the time. I have decided to refine myself in many aspects, one of them being classic literature.

My first book of choice: The Screwtape Letters!

This book was amazing!! It is the story of Screwtape, a devil who is mentoring his nephew Wormwood on how to be a better devil with the current patient he is working on. This is a deep thinking book. Not only intellectually but spiritually also. Once you get use to God being referred to as the "enemy," you are whisked away in seeing what possibly could be the thought process of those who are against Deity and His plan.

Screwtape addresses everything from conversion, love, war, politics and the general nature of man. Some of my favorite letters covered the topics of prayer, becoming like God, the work of God, Democracy and Equality. Here are some great quotes from the book:

"She's the sort of woman who lives for others - you can tell the others by their hunted expression." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "All right, then, have it your way." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"When He [God] talks of their losing their selves, He means only abandoning the clamour of self-will; once they have done that, He really gives them back all their personality, and boasts (I am afraid, sincerely) that when they are wholly His they will be more themselves than ever." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

"The humans live in time but our Enemy (God) destines them for eternity." — C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters)

These are just a few great quotes! I highly recommend this book. C.S. Lewis is a brilliant author and I am so glad I took the time to read the Screwtape Letters.

This is a fantastic book!! I love anything C.S. Lewis. The Great Divorce is my fave with The Chronicles of Narnia not far behind. The Screwtape Letters is definitely a classic!
