Courage to be Chaste

I wanted to jot this down before I would forget these feelings.

My boss just plopped down 2 tickets to a play as a gift to me. Now it is a complete treat and very rare occasion that he does this for me.

I love going to the play! I love the cultural arts and being whisked away into another world for a period of time!

I thanked him for the kind gesture and then immediately looked up the play, as to I have never heard of it before. As I read the details of the play, something caught my eye immediately. Strong language and mature themes at the bottom of the description. I found a link that said content advisory and clicked on it.

My boss had given me tickets to a play that does not meet my standards at all. The advisory broke down every swear word, unclean content and mature theme depicted in this play. The last sentence said "If it were a movie, Touch(ed) would be rated “PG-13” or “R.”"

I sat in my office for a few minutes on contemplating what to do. I did not want to offend him for such a sweet gesture and I did not want the money for those tickets to go to waste. I remembered what Brother MacDonald said at the fireside last Sunday:

"Courage to be Chaste!"

The theme for the youth this year is Joshua 1:9. "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

So, I gathered up my courage and walked into his office with the tickets.

"I am sorry, but I cannot accept these tickets."

We live in a world where we have to be careful in all aspects as to what our spirits are exposed to. As much as I love the arts, sometimes I have to say no. And maybe offend.........

In the end, I have to deal with what I see in the mirror and the only thing I enjoy looking at is a clean, chaste, virtuous daughter of God.

To my posterity that reads this: Have Courage to be Chaste!

I saw an ad on ksl.com (of all places!) for this play and based on just the photo could tell it wasn't the cleanest form of entertainment. :) I admire your courage! When I grow up I want to be like you.

Good for you! How did he respond? We got tickets from a co-worker once and went to the play. We did not check it out ahead of time like you did. The language was so bad after just 20 minutes we walked out. It would have been rated R. Next time we will know better. :-)
